Park End Cottage Brigsteer.
Helsington is based on the Elizabethan manor of Helsington Laithes at the southern approach to Kendal. The parish is divided geographically by the river Kent, the Kendal bypass and by Scout Scar. At the western extremity lies the village of Brigsteer overlooking the Lyth valley. At the eastern side the parish borders the parish of Natland and the mainline westcoast railway line. The most dominant feature is Scout Scar, a limestone outcrop which divides the Lyth valley in the west from the Kent valley in the east. From the top of the Scar it is possible to obtain wonderful views over the surrounding country from Morecambe bay in the south to the Lakeland fells in the north. Far to the east the distinctive outline of Ingleborough is easily seen. To the west the skyline is dominated by the long ridge of Whitbarrow Scar. The community in the parish is small - only 160 households, and divided between the village of Brigsteer and the scattered farming communities of Prizet and Hawes. Also within the parish is Sizergh castle, the ancient seat of the Strickland family but now owned by the National Trust.
